Located in the suburbs of Tunis, 10 km from the capital, La Goulette is Tunisia’s first port. Its name comes from the Italian "goleta", deformation of the Arabic "Halk el Oued".
The city suffered many attacks, the most memorable of which was that of Barbarossa in 1534. Charles V, who seized it, built a Spanish-Turkish fortress on the heights of the city, which had been used for a long time as a prison. The town was then better known for its penal colony than for its fishing port. Tourists simply cross this port on their way to Carthage. Too bad, because La Goulette is a good stop for its culinary specialty, fish.
